Department of Pathology

The Department of Pathology established the Blood Bank on 2nd October 1980 under the Presidentship of Dr. A. B. Malakreddy. It was shifted to the present premises in the Casualty block in BH to facilitate immediate availability of the lifesaving product. It has a record of supplying more than 10,000 units/ year. Fractionated blood components are available only in our Blood Bank. The department is well organized with all modern equipments including Immunohistochemistry, Automated Coagulometer, Automated Hematology analyser, Pentahead teaching microscope, adequate clinical material and qualified teaching and nonteaching staff. The central laboratory and Blood Bank provide services to patients of BTGH, Sangameshwar hospital and others. The departmental library and seminar hall is well furnished with all recent audiovisual aids, books and scientific journals.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM: As per the regulations ofRGUHS Bengaluru

Undergraduate Teaching Program for phase II students:

III Semester: August to December: Subject General Pathology; Four theory classes of one hour each and one practical of2 hours per week. Seminar by students once in 2 months.

IV Semester: January to June: Subject - Haernatology and Clinical Pathology; Three theory classes and one practical classes per week. Seminar by students once a month.

V Semester: July to December: Subject - Systemic Pathology; Three theory classes and one practical classes per week. Tutorials are conducted every fortnight.

Internal Assessment examinations including theory and practicals are conducted at the end of each semester similar to the university final exams.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

P.G. TEACHING PROGRAMME (As per guide lines of Health University Bangaluru & Mel)

  1. Theory classes: weekly
  2. Slide seminar: weekly.
  3. Subject seminars: weekly two.
  4. Journal review: weekly.
  5. Interesting case discussion: fortnightly
  6. Group Discussion(lnterdepartmental): monthly
  7. Guest lectures: 6-8 per year.
  8. CPCs conducted regularly.
  9. Theory test on selected topic: Monthly. Practical test: Quarterly
  10. PGs are posted in different sections - Histopathology, Cytology & Hematology, Blood Bank, other departments on rotation. For advanced training in Oncopathlogy, Neuropathology and Autopsy, the PG students are posted to higher centres like Tata Memorial cancer hospital, KEM Hospital Mumbai, NIMHANS Bengaluru and NIMS Hyderabad as per RGUHS regulations.
  11. Logbook and day to day work diary is maintained by PGs and verified by the faculty members regularly and countersigned by HOD.
  12. The PG teaching program will be attended by all the PGs and teaching staff of the department.
  13. PGs are actively involved in undergraduate teaching program as a part of their curriculum.
  14. PG's must attend CMEs, Conferences and Workshops and they have to present a poster and a oral paper in State/ National conference
  15. Before appearing for the University exams they should publish atleast one article in indexed journals.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The department is well equipped with laboratories for both under graduate and post graduate students. The Central Diagnostic Laboratory located in the BTGH has all modern equipments including Immunohistochemistry, Coagulometer, Automated Hematology analyser, etc. The department Library has more than 450 books and has nearly 20 journals including e-journals. Museum has more than 1000 mounted and unmounted specimens.
