Department of Microbiology
Department is well equipped and updated as per the MCI regulations & RGUHS curriculum to train both undergraduates and post graduate students. Department has its own library with more than 300 books. Museum has all the charts and models for the students to understand the subject in 3D presentations.
The Dept. is catering to the microbiological investigation needs like Aerobic & Anaerobic culture & sensitivity, fungal culture investigations, facilities for diagnosis of Tuberculosis and malaria. Serological investigations for various viral infections like Hepatitis, Influenza, Dengue fever, Chikungunea, HIV, etc. are also available with updated techniques.
The department is connected with the RNTCP programme, where regular diagnosis is done by fluorescent Microscopy. M.D. Post-graduation course was started in 1989 under HOD Dr Ramakanth Kulkarni. two P.G. students are admitted every year. P.G. course was recognized by MCI under the Department head Dr Gangane Ravindranath in 1994
Two state level CME’s were conducted, one in 1996 under the guidance of Dr Ramakanth Kulkarni and other in 2007 under the Guidance of HOD Dr Gangane Ravindranath. The department was actively involved in the NACO programme as State Reference Laboratory for HIV and AIDS Gulbarga headed by DrGangane Ravindranath which has done a wonderful work for 3 years (2006-2009) ; conducting field works , sentinel surveys for the prevalence of HIV & AIDS, conducted number of external quality assurance training programme in HIV testing for VCTC, PPTCT, Blood bank staffs, ICTC of north Karnataka health establishments.
Our department is active not only in academics, but also in social works like helping the visually impaired and orphans. On the occasion of Children’s day 2014, conducted a welfare programme by providing beddings and warm cloths.
Academic programme
The department has well equipped Research Laboratory in college, for the post-graduates in various specialities like Aerobic & Anaerobic bacteriology, serology, Mycology and Parasitology.
Infrastructure:
The department is well equipped with over 125 Microscopes, Deep Freezers, Hot air ovens, Autoclaves, Cooling Centrifuge, ELISA, C02 incubator, BACTEC,Laminar flow,Turbidometry etc. Various aerobic and anaerobic cultures, fungal cultures, serological diagnosis are carried out on a regular basis from clinical samples as well as research projects.
Dept. Library contains more than 300 books.
The department is well equipped to train the postgraduate students with good number of the clinical samples for training and research.
